Excellent piece! Progressive white Americans aren't the only ones who overlook Asian Americans. The challenge is that our community is so small that most Americans have never met one of us and what they do know is from the media (e.g., Bruce Lee may be fading from mainstream memory at this point, so maybe it's more along the lines of communists in China and the North Korean dictator).

Moreover, the common assumption in America that everyone of East Asian descent is Chinese means further erasure. I grew up in CA (the Bay Area, not Central CA) and never met a Hmong nor heard of your community until I took Asian American Studies classes at UCLA and met Hmong student activists. We need more Hmong voices and visibility. I look forward to reading more of your work.
