I agree I don't want to be envied, but sadly we don't have friends in our economic cohort. Most of my friends (as well as my husband's friends) have stay-at-home spouses (the women who work have husbands at home or in creative fields who make very little!). I guess the norm is not to have 2 spouses in high-earning jobs.

My job is fairly low paid compared to other attorneys (I make less than a first-year big firm associate despite working for more than 20 years). But the cost of childcare is so ridiculous here (over $4,000/month) that unless you're making six figures and you really like your job, it doesn't make sense for the second spouse to work a demanding job with long hours.

Anyhow, we really like our current friends and are not spending time in each other's homes anyway (especially since COVID) so until they see the renovated home, we'll likely fly under the radar.
