I confess I actually googled sympathy v. empathy and I'm still not entirely clear what's right. My understanding has always been that empathy means I can put myself in that person's shoes. I believe sympathy means you understand what they're going through but that you don't identify with what they're experiencing (and maybe never could). So I might empathize with a woman who was rejected based on her looks but I could only sympathize with a guy who thinks he's too hot for her.
