I so relate to your story. My immigrant dad told me that I should choose STEM because he thought an "objective" field would have clear answers. No one could say I wasn't good enough or smart enough if I had the right answer. He feared I would not succeed in the "soft sciences" as it's so subjective and bosses could easily decide they didn't want to hire an Asian American.
I hope we can tell the next generation of writers to pursue their dreams without worrying (as much) about racism holding them back.
