I was very sad that Afton Williamson left as we loved her character and the actress is amazing. I was dismayed to read that she was sexually assaulted and also repeatedly subjected to racist treatment from the hair and makeup staff. It's made continuing to watch the show feel awkward, like I'm being complicit in supporting folks who didn't stand up for Afton. It's really hard because this is one of the few shows that doesn't just paint the police officers and prosecutors as our saviors.
I also didn't realize Titus Makin, Jr. was considering leaving the show. He brings so much of the heart to the show--the "teacher's pet" at the Police Academy who ends up being the underdog once he's in the field. I didn't even get into his story in this brief essay but I'm glad to learn he was the impetus in getting the show to more explicitly discuss the over-policing of communities of color.
