Kudos to you for letting him be the lead decision-maker! This reflects EXACTLY what I was hoping to convey--that the college admissions process should be driven by the teen doing the research and figuring out what s/he is prioritizing rather than a parent's short-sighted focus on the parent's goal (e.g., a prestigious college instead of a less competitive place that has the program the teen is most interested in).

Having lived through the opposite experience, I am trying really hard to offer my kids more options and to convey that I truly would be supportive if they chose to go to a state school with an 80% admission rate.

I am hopeful that we can empower our daughter to make a similar decision if that's the one she wants.
