LOL, Tim, you must not be from a large immigrant family! My immigrant parents regularly hosted such gatherings for no reason at all. My entire extended family except for two uncles (whose families are still in Asia) and one cousin (he moved his family to Kansas City since he's an academic researcher) are within 40 miles of my home.

My husband (a 5th generation Chinese American) has his entire extended family (including cousins of cousins) living nearby as well. We restricted our wedding guest list to first cousins only but one of his cousins invited the ENTIRE family and had over 1,000 guests at her wedding!

Anyhow, my husband only saw his relatives at the holidays (and weddings/funerals) so that's what we adjusted to once we married. We host both side of our families on Christmas, Mother's Day, Father's Day, and Thanksgiving. Thank goodness my husband loves to cook because he makes everything from scratch!
