My Boyfriend Took His Best Friend to Our Senior Prom While I Sat At Home Alone
How many of us developed feelings for our best friend?
Like many of my fellow Gen X friends, I liked the movie, “When Harry Met Sally” and watched it multiple times. I grew up thinking that straight men and women cannot be friends, even if you don’t think you’re attracted to the friend initially. Feelings always develop from at least one party!
For my younger readers, maybe “13 Going on 30” is a more familiar pop culture reference, as the heroine realizes her best friend is the right guy for her. Or maybe the Netflix hit, “To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before” where the heroine falls for her fake-boyfriend because she’s been spending so much time with him and getting to know him as a friend.
I had Harry and Sally on my mind when my first serious boyfriend insisted nothing had ever happened with his female best friend before we started dating. She is a friendly, attractive person so I wondered, “Why didn’t anything ever happen?” I accepted his answer but I couldn’t stop thinking about it the night I was sitting at home, alone, while he took her to our senior prom.
I never expected to date this particular boy. I had barely noticed him the first 3.5 years of high school. Fast forward to winter of senior…
