Thank you for your support for the Asian American community, as well as your patient and gracious teaching of new immigrants. From my experience, I see that many immigrants from Asia are unfamiliar with how American history and white supremacy have shaped who we are today.
In particular, anti-Black racism and the model minority myth are often used hand-in-hand to help “inspire” new immigrants to climb out of poverty. The message is, “If you just work hard and don’t complain and ask for equal rights like Blacks have, you’ll succeed here.”
Never mind that centuries of racism and slavery have robbed Black families of access to fair wages for their labor and the intergenerational wealth that gives people a leg up.
We need to teach every American, not just the new immigrants, of why our nation is the way it is today.
