This made me smile! I think people who are adventurous eaters can relate. There are certainly widely accepted foods that everyone (in your culture) finds acceptable, but I think it's fun to explore the margins.
Growing up as the daughter of immigrants, my parents didn't know what the "right" flavor profiles were. When I asked for a sandwich to take to school like the other kids, my mom packed me scrambled eggs, peanut butter, and American cheese sandwiches. Needless to say, I learned early to pack my own lunches if I wanted to fit in with the other kids!
Thanks for sharing this essay of your creative food choices. I'm inspired to write about my childhood meals now!
