We also purchased a shotgun and handgun when we moved to a rural area that is 90+% white. Even if we believe the police are here to protect us (which is easier for me to say as an Asian American), it would still take more than 30 minutes to get to our home. Thus, we opted to arm ourselves as a defensive strategy. I hope we never have to use these weapons to defend ourselves but I do feel having them here provides some peace of mind.
